It's still golf, of course. But more and more, the Hootie and the Blowfish Monday After The Masters Pro-Am is about rock 'n roll.
The sixth annual charity golf event, set for April 10, will again draw a field of PGA Tour players to the University Club in Blythewood. But the biggest names will be the celebrity friends of the Columbia-based band, and the performing groups in the band's charity concert at the Township Auditorium that evening.
Topping the golf professional field will be "Wild thing" John Daly and TV commentators Peter Kostis and David Feherty. Missing will be such names as Ernie Els, David Duval and Tiger Woods, all of whom have played in the tournament in recent years.
By contrast, the concert will have a heavyweight lineup. Besides Hootie, the show will feature Sister Hazel, Edwin McCain, Vertical Horizon and Creed. Tickets are $30.50.
"The concert will be very special," tournament director Paul Graham said. "We don't sell many to the general public, maybe 500-600."
Tickets for the golf tournament are $10, down from last year's $15. "We felt like a lot of kids come to the golf tournament, so we wanted to drop that cost," Graham said.
The golf event will still have plenty of familiar names. ESPN personalities Linda Cohn, Mike Tirico and Stuart Scott will play, along with Hootie members Mark Bryan, Darius Rucker, Dean Felber and Jim Sonefeld.
Other names include 1980 USC Heismen Trophy winner George Rogers, Gov. Jim Hodges and USC assistant football coach Skip Holtz. USC football coach Lou Holtz has withdrawn.
This year, proceeds from the golf and concert will go to several education groups around South Carolina, to be used for computers and musical equipment, Graham said.
A total of $150,000 will be donated this year through the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation, he said.
In its five years, the tournament and concert have raised $1 million for charities. Between 10,000 and 15,000 fans are expected to attend this year's golf tournament.
ESPN and ESPN2 will televise the tournament on a tape-delay basis. Dates have yet to be determined.
